Cakes Galore: Work, Birthdays, and Weddings!

I guess I never followed up on my last post as promised to talk about my job.  I'm still loving it, and it was a little slow the other day and I thought I'd take some snapshots real quick.

We get to eat a 1 free cupcake and drink each day.  I'm still kind of in the phase where I'm trying to taste them all so I can give my opinions to the customer, so I really have to even if I don't want one.
I know, it's such a hard life...being forced to eat a cupcake every day :)
 This one's called Love Potion

Here are two of our most popular cupcakes

I'm liking it a lot and at least this month, I'm working (the majority of the time) Mondays/Tuesdays and Fridays/Saturdays.  Monday and Tuesdays I work nights where I work as a barista making frappes, hot chocolates, and italian cream sodas.  Oh yeah, and I obviously sell cupcakes :)

Fridays and Saturday's I work mornings...meaning I get up at 4:30am and bake, prep cupcakes, frost and prep for the next day. Because Fridays and Saturdays are our most popular days, we bake a lot. We normally do about 300-400 cupcakes for the store front which includes 8 different flavors.  But we also have a lot of special orders for those days.  For instance we had an order of 30 dozen mini cupcakes for a wedding.  Sometimes we make like 700+ cupcakes in a morning, just us two bakers.

Anyway that's enough rambling.  Long story short, I'm loving it.  It can be exhausting and weird on the sleep schedule, but it's what I love to do.

-----------------------------

For the most part--working gets the baking out of my system.  But this last week, I really wanted to make a cool cake for two of my close friends.  Jennifer had her 21st birthday on Monday and Ashton is going to be getting married next month.  Since it's the end of Spring semester, Ashton was going to be leaving for home.  We had a nice breakfast at Kneaders (which was delicious!) and then came to our apartment to hang out and eat cake.

I decided to do a clashing cake--one half wedding looking and the other half a birthday cake.
I went with a  "chocolate wasted" cake since people seem to make a big deal out of turning 21.  It's basically a ridiculous amount of chocolatey goodness.

I'll just kinda let the progression of pictures tell the story. You can figure it out :)

  Chocolate cake, Chocolate buttercream

Drizzled with melted chocolate on sides and top

And then I did blue/white vanilla buttercream on the other side and just piped it

It was really tasty! We enjoyed it a lot and had a bunch left over.  I forgot about starting the cake until after I got home from work Monday night and we were meeting Tuesday morning, so I didn't get to start it until about midnight.  So especially for assembling and piping the cake in the wee hours of the morning, I'd say I'm pretty happy with it :)

Wedding

We had the opportunity to go to Ashlea Michael's wedding earlier this month!  It was very beautiful and a great chance to see some old friends.  Ashlea made an absolutely beautiful bride!

Here are a few snapshots from the afternoon:
